The 4 best places to visit in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is a beautiful country to visit, whether are heading there as a family or as a couple. The island has so much to offer and do, with a whole host of excursions and places to visit.

We have visited Lanzarote a number of times and we have never had a time where we have had nothing to do. The beaches are beautiful and there is so much history on the island, there is always more to explore. So whether you are one that likes a holiday packed with things to prefer to take the slow approach to your holidays, there is something for everyone.

Here are our 4 top places to visit in Lanzarote:

Teguise market –

The 5 best places to visit in Lanzarote

Based in the old capital of Lanzarote, Teguise, every Sunday there is a market jam-packed full of stalls to visit. It has a combination of stalls from food, to clothing and handmade gifts. I love visiting the market when we are in Lanzarote for a number of reasons.

Firstly, there is a stall that sells homemade onion bread and spicy chilli chutney, it is delicious and one you should try!

Then there is the atmosphere, the town itself is beautiful and packed full of the classic things you see on Lanzarote, such as the white buildings with the green doors. It just brings this atmosphere that you can absorb on your way around.

Not everything is great on the stalls, there are some that are selling cheap bags etc, however, there are some beautiful hand-carved items and classic clothing so well worth a walk. If you are staying at a resort, most will arrange an excursion there which is just a few euros each for the coach.

Rancho Texas –

This is one of our favourite places to visit in Lanzarote, you can lose yourselves in here for the whole day, with no issues!

There are two main excursions for Rancho Texas, you have the whole day visit. This is usually from first thing in the morning until late afternoon early evening. On this one, you have full access to the park for the animals and shows that are on and are able to access the water park. Then there is the evening shows and events that they run.

On both our visits we have done the day trips and have loved them both times.

The park is in itself a zoo, but it brings more to you than that. There is a whole host of animals to see, you can pan for gold, you can be taken back into the Western times too with the layout. There is also the splash park which is hugely popular. The great thing about the splash park is you can get yourself a locker, so you can leave your items in the locker from the splash park and enjoy the zoo without lugging it all around. They also have a great selection of shows such as sea lions, parrots and birds of prey which I would recommend you go and watch.

The prices in the park are pretty reasonable too, the food is delicious and you will not go hungry!

The 5 best places to visit in Lanzarote

Submarine Safari –

For those of you looking to do something a little different, how about taking a trip on a yellow submarine.

Yes, you heard me right, you can take a trip to the bottom of the ocean in a yellow submarine.

We have done this twice on our visits, once when the kids were small and then a few years later when they were a bit bigger and both times it was amazing. It is not the longest trip, it only takes up about half a day but it is something like you will never normally do.

Based in Porta Del Carmen, Submarine Safari gives you the chance to head to the bottom of the ocean and see things a little differently. With the seats for all guests facing out towards the ocean, you get the perfect view as you do a little sea bed tour. There is shipwrecks, fish and if you are lucky rays which you get to see whilst you are down there.

If you have a special birthday or event, you can even get a special message on the seabed from a diver!

It may be a little pricy for half a day but it is worth every penny to see the kids faces when they get to see the world from a different perspective.

The 5 best places to visit in Lanzarote

Portabello restaurant –

For those based in Costa Teguise, or within travelling distance, Portabello restaurant is the place you need to be eating!

A little Italian restaurant tucked down a little side street near the sea, it serves the best food on the whole island. We have eaten there so many times on our trips and it never disappoints, from pizza to pasta to fresh fish dishes. Nati and her team bring you a little joy through the atmosphere and food.

They have been closed for a while due to Covid but I know they are back open and ready to welcome their guests back in. If you are looking for some suggestions for food other than their amazing pizzas, without a doubt you should try the lemon salmon or lamb ravioli when they come up, there are amazing.

Also if you are celebrating a birthday or anniversary, let them know. They are able to arrange cakes to be in the restaurant especially for the event!

Lanzarote is a beautiful island to visit, you can just absorb what is going on without any plans and take it all in but I hope if you are looking for some trips whilst you are there that you find this useful. For those who are heading out there soon, I am very jealous! I can’t wait to get back out there and see what is going on now, every trip back there has been some changes and after almost 2 years with minimal travel, I am sure they are looking forward to welcoming back their friends from afar.

We will be sharing more places to visit from other countries as well as travel tips soon.
